Leading academics, unionists, NGO leaders and parliamentarians have backed a call to reform inheritance tax. In a letter to The Guardian the group said it wanted to remind the public of the benefit of inheritance tax in creating a fairer society. It comes as an upcoming Fabian pamphlet calls for radical reform of the tax, saying the present system has "come to the end of the road".

 It is vital that no one faith or ethnic group can totally dominate a town or city to the exclusion of all others, said Secretary of State Hazel Blears at the launch of the Fabian Housing and Community Policy Network. She said: "There is nothing wrong with enclaves of particular groups – every city benefits from its China Towns, Little Italies, or as in London, Bangla Town, Kangaroo Valley, or Little Korea."
